Lucky escape for shoppers after heavy rain causes the glass roof of mall to suddenly fall in

SHOPPERS had a narrow escape after heavy rain caused the ceiling at a shopping centre to collapse.

Wet plaster crashed to the floor, while onlookers stood and stared in horror clutching their shopping bags.

A spokesman for the Belfry shopping centre, in Redhill, Surrey, said security staff cleared the area when they noticed a leak on Tuesday.

They cordoned off the space before any pieces of wet plaster fell, they added.

In a statement bosses said: "Our security noticed the leak occurring and quickly cleared the area of shoppers before any pieces of the wet plaster fell.

"We're sorry for any inconvenience, concern or excitement the regrettable incident caused. Repairs are now under way and will be completed as soon as possible."
